Chelicerates

  1. Fact #1- the first confirmed chelicerate fossils date from 445 million years ago the Late Ordovician period.

    Fact #2- Chelicerates were originally predators, but the group has diversified to use all the major feeding strategies: predation, parasitism, herbivory, scavenging and eating decaying organic matter.

    Fact #3- In the past, Native Americans ate the flesh of horseshoe crabs, and used the tail spines as spear tips and the shells to bail water out of their canoes.

  5. I learned that there are over 77,000 well-identified species of air-breathing chelicerates, and there may be about 500,000 unidentified species.

    #1: Chelicerates are characterized by the absence of antenna and jaws and the presence of feeding structures which are used mainly for grasping and picking apart food.

    #2: the chelicerates are subphylum of the anthropods and consist of only two classes the arachnids and the merostonata.

    #3: the chelicerates originated as marine animals.

    #4: their lifestyle is largely carnivorous or other kinds of heterotrophs.

    #5: they have segmented bodies with jointed limbs all covered in a protein cuticle.

    #6: many are unable to eat solid foods due to their narrow guy and instead must expel digestive enzymes onto their prey, liquid ingredient it and ingesting the food.

  9. 1. Horseshoe crabs have a body protected by a hard shell, 2 compound lateral eyes plus a pair of medial eyes which direct vision and ultraviolet light.

    2. Horseshoe crabs are motile they swim upside down.

    3. Horseshoe crabs live off the coast of North America in the Atlantic Ocean.

  10. 1) Medical researchers have been known to use the venom from this species for treatment of disorders, for example cancer or erectile dysfunction

    2) Chelicerates' bodies and appendages are covered with a tough cuticle substance made of chitin and hardening proteins

    3)Horseshoe crabs use external fertilization, which means that hte sperm and ova meet outside the parents' bodies. But other animals of the chelicerates use internal fertilization, though in most species fertilization is indirect.

    4) People are now genetically engineering spider silk by producing it in goats' milk and in the leaves of plants because a spider's silk is very light and strong.
