Do Crustaceans Feel Pain?

In the article, "Do Crustaceans Feel Pain" published Augest 9,2013 by Kate Yandell was about the fact that Crustaceans do feel pain. Scientist Robert Elwood was the one who did the research for this experiment. Robert went through a series of experiments that dealt with crabs who were subjected to electric shocks. With this experiment "many have argued that crustaceans do not feel pain, claiming the animals’ responses to stimuli like electric shocks are merely automatic."(Yamdell). In the article Yandell then explained the two experiments that Robert did on the crabs. The first experiment was where Robert put the crabs in a cage where two shelters were found. One shelter had electric shocks and the other did not. His results were that the crabs stayed away from the shelter with the electric shock. The second experiment dealt with hermit crabs. In this situation the hermit crabs were shocked within their shell. In a hermit crabs life they most often do not like to change their shell but in this circumstance when the crab was shocked the hermit crab ended up moving it shell. Robert explained that with these results that crustaceans do experience pain and like to avoid it.

  1. That is so cool that crustaceans feel pain. I never even thought about the idea of how they would feel pain. It's neat how they experimented using electric shocks with the crabs.

  2. I never knew that crustaceans feel pain, I always thought that crabs' shells served as a barrier for any pain they might feel. It makes sense that they like to avoid the pain, and it is interesting that they change their shells as a reaction.

  3. I feel like this is mean and somewhat torturous to the innocent crabs that they did these experiments on. Were they permanently harmed by these experiments or was it only brief pain that they were feeling?
