Protecting Pets

In March of 2017, San Francisco passed a law to help shelter animals find homes. It states that pet stores must sell dogs and cats from shelters and rescue groups only. I think that this new law will send a message to any breeders who treat animals cruelly, and protect against animal abuse. Some breeders run puppy and kitten mills, where they raise hundreds of animals at a time in cramped, unsanitary spaces. The animals often go without enough food or water, or proper medical treatment. This law was enacted to combat this treatment and provide a hopeful life for homeless pets.

  1. Very awesome to hear that people are taking steps to first take care of animals in need. I would love to see a law of this type at a state scale someday as it would only inspire more change.

  2. I think the mere fact of selling an animal is the root of society's problems. Most species of animals have been around longer than us and have more beneficial values to our ecosystem. Selling a "pet" to satisfy the needs of selfish humans is why these breeders have a paycheck. Yes this law to fight against breeders is a good baby step, however I still think breeders will not stop at a simple law. What they are doing is illegal so they have no boundaries. I think to solve our problems, humans must not support any store that sells animals, or any human that sells animals. If we want to bring an animal into our lives, we must adopt locally from friends, not some guy in a white van.

  3. It has always been better to adopt a shelter pet then to take in a breeded one, in my opinion. Why buy an expensive dog because of its particular breed? In my opinion, it would be better to give a dog who's never had a home love, care, and affection so then it doesn't be put down due to the limited space in dog shelters.
